What do I do if I'm in an auto accident?
Be sure to remain calm. If you are injured, seek immediate medical attention. Collect information from the involved parties including name, address, phone number, driver insurance company name and policy, witness statements and their contact information (if applicable), photographs of the scene including the license place of the other driver and the site of the damage. Consider calling the police if it's unclear whether you may have contributed to the accident if there are physical injuries to yourself, the other driver or passengers, or significant damage. When you get home, contact your own insurance company and consider suing the other driver's insurance company.
What should I do if the other driver's insurance company contacts me for a statement?
If you're injured, you should not speak to the other driver's insurance company until you've spoken to a lawyer. Anything you say can be used against you if you file a claim for your injuries.
Should I see a doctor if I don't feel like I was injured in the accident?
It may take a few days before you feel the full effects of the crash. If you wait too long, the insurance company may not believe your injuries are related to your accident. If you have any doubts, contact your family physician for an appointment.
What is the typical timeline for resolving a personal injury claim or lawsuit?
There is no set time frame for a case to be resolved; however you do have a limited amount of time to file the claim for your injury. Claims and lawsuits can go anywhere from a few weeks to over a year depending on the nature and extent of the injuries, and complexity of your case.
How is the value of my personal injury case calculated, including medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering?
You are entitled to compensation for any financial and physical injuries resulting from the negligence of someone else. Whether it’s medical expenses, lost wages, property damages, pain and suffering, loss of a life, emotional damages, or another form of injury, you deserve to be compensated.
